What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are custom-fitted tooth prosthetics used to cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. They are designed to restore the tooth’s size, shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these materials, and tailored to meet the patient’s needs and preferences.

Who Should Consider Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are versatile and can be an ideal choice for various situations, including:

  • Broken or cracked tooth
  • Worn down tooth
  • Covering and supporting a tooth with a large filling when there aren’t a lot of teeth left.
  • Holding a dental bridge in place.
  • Covering misshapen or severely discolored teeth.
  • Covering a dental implant.

What is the Dental Crown Procedure?

Getting a dental crown at Epic Family Dental typically involves two visits to our office. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Examination and X-ray: Dr. Sorge examines and takes X-rays of the tooth to check its roots and surrounding bone. If the tooth has extensive decay or there is a risk of infection, a root canal treatment may be necessary.
  2. Tooth Preparation: We will numb the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue with local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. The tooth receiving the crown is filed down along the top and sides to make space for the crown.
  3. Impression: After reshaping, a digital impression of the tooth (and surrounding teeth) to ensure the crown will fit seamlessly within your bite.
  4. Temporary Crown: We will place a temporary crown to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being made.
  5. Fitting the New Crown: Once your new crown is ready, we will place the permanent crown as needed to ensure a perfect fit and bite.
  6. Cementing the Crown: Once everything looks good, the crown is cemented.

Dental Crowns Aftercare

After dental crown placement, keeping your oral health care routine is essential.

  1. Oral Hygiene: Practice good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily and flossing daily.
  2. Avoidance: Avoid chewing hard foods, ice, or other hard objects.
  3. Protection: Use a nightguard if you grind or clench your teeth.
  4. Dental Check-ups: Attend regular dental check-ups and cleanings.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

  1. Restoration of Tooth Function: Crowns restore the functionality of damaged teeth, allowing for everyday eating and speaking.
  2. Protection: Crowns provide a protective shell around the tooth, reducing the risk of further damage or decay.
  3. Aesthetic Improvement: With materials that mimic natural teeth, crowns offer significant cosmetic enhancements.
  4. Longevity: With proper care, dental crowns can last many years, making them cost-effective.
  5. Comfort: Crowns are customized to fit seamlessly in your mouth, providing a comfortable and natural feel.
